Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, describing his administration as a “monumental failure” and insisting that political leaders must be held accountable for their performance in office.
Obi said his position was influenced by the resignation speech of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced plans to step down amid growing public dissatisfaction over economic challenges and unfulfilled campaign promises.
Drawing a comparison between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, Obi argued that leaders should prioritise the interests of the people over personal ambition, adding that public office demands responsibility and accountability when governments fail to deliver on their promises.
According to Obi, Nigeria is grappling with worsening economic hardship, rising living costs and deepening insecurity, conditions he said have eroded public confidence and require decisive leadership.
The opposition figure maintained that stepping aside in the face of persistent governance challenges is a demonstration of democratic responsibility rather than weakness, urging Nigerian leaders to embrace a culture of accountability.
His remarks are expected to reignite debate over the Tinubu administration’s handling of the economy and governance, as political actors continue to trade criticisms over the country’s direction.
