Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has pushed back against criticisms of his modest lifestyle, revealing that even during his tenure as chairman of Fidelity Bank, his personal choices drew concern over the institution’s public image.

Speaking candidly, Obi disclosed that while he was leading the bank, he resided in FESTAC, a decision that reportedly unsettled some within the organisation.

“As Chairman of Fidelity Bank, I was living in FESTAC. The bank even told me that my lifestyle is affecting their corporate image,” he said.

Despite these concerns, Obi noted that the bank continued to thrive under his leadership, suggesting that simplicity and prudent living did not undermine its success.

His remarks come amid ongoing public conversations about leadership, personal values, and the perception of wealth among Nigeria’s political and business elite. Obi has consistently positioned himself as an advocate of frugality and accountability in public service, arguing that leaders should prioritise substance over image.

The former Anambra State governor’s comments are likely to reignite debate over the role of personal lifestyle in shaping public trust and institutional credibility.
