Former Presidential candidate Peter Obi has attributed the recent United States designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern to poor leadership and mismanagement of national resources.
The Labour Party flagbearer made the assertion on Monday via his X social media platform, following Washington’s announcement which suggested possible military intervention over Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation.
“The recent pronouncement by the US government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern,” Obi stated.
He acknowledged the unprecedented levels of insecurity plaguing the nation, citing Amnesty International’s report that over 10,000 people have been killed since May 2023.
“The unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians is most condemnable, and all efforts must be made to bring it to a stop,” he said.
Whilst recognising that the security challenges predated the current administration, Obi criticised what he described as inadequate response from the All Progressives Congress-led government.
“What is most unfortunate is the lack and absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion on the part of APC-led government to effectively govern, galvanise and lead Nigeria where no one is unwarrantedly oppressed and killed,” he remarked.
The former Anambra State governor emphasised that the crisis was largely preventable with competent leadership and proper governance.
He called for constructive diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the United States to address the security concerns, stressing the importance of preserving the longstanding strategic partnership between both democracies.
“The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and any other plausible engagement by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns. Both countries must work in concert and expeditiously towards that purpose,” Obi added.
