A prominent northern political figure, Hajia Najatu Muhammad, has described the alleged move by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a “big blow” to the North, warning that such political shifts could undermine national cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, Muhammad expressed concern that Nigeria needs leaders who prioritise unity rather than those who, in her view, may be “incentivised to switch sides”.

She cautioned that the reported political realignments risk deepening national divisions at a time when the country requires stability and collective focus.

“A big blow to the North. Kwankwaso and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf joining the APC when Nigeria needs leaders who unite,” she said. “It seems some are being incentivised to switch sides, undermining national unity. The North must act and wake up by 2027.”

Her remarks come amid heightened political manoeuvring as parties and key figures begin consolidating ahead of the next general election. While neither Kwankwaso nor Governor Yusuf has publicly confirmed any move to the APC, speculation continues to fuel debate across the region.

Political analysts note that the defection of such influential figures—if confirmed—could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in the North-West.

As conversations intensify, stakeholders are urging restraint and calling for political decisions that strengthen, rather than fracture, national unity.
