The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has dismissed speculation that its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Arise Television on Tuesday, NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed clarified that the party is focused on broader political strategies rather than defection.

He outlined three options under consideration: contesting elections independently, forming coalitions with like-minded parties, or considering invitations from others—provided NNPP members’ interests are safeguarded.

“I don’t think what Kwankwaso said indicated in any way that he is defecting or about to defect,” Ahmed said.

He explained that Kwankwaso’s remarks in Kano were misinterpreted, stressing they referred to possible alliances, not defection.

“Kwankwaso merely said that if the APC extends an invitation, he would give them attention—but only if they guarantee the protection of our members’ interests, not just his as an individual,” Ahmed added.
