Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has written to former United States President Donald Trump, seeking his intervention over what he described as ongoing genocide and systemic persecution of the Igbo people in Nigeria.
In the letter, which surfaced on social media on Thursday, Kanu accused the Nigerian government of orchestrating widespread human rights abuses, extrajudicial killings, and targeted suppression against members of IPOB and the wider southeastern population.
He urged Trump to use his global influence to draw international attention to the alleged atrocities and to push for accountability from the Nigerian authorities.
Kanu’s letter reportedly detailed incidents of violence and displacement in parts of the South-East, calling on world leaders and international human rights bodies to take urgent action to prevent further bloodshed.
The IPOB leader, who has been in detention since his re-arrest in 2021, reaffirmed his commitment to the self-determination struggle, describing it as a “legitimate quest for freedom from systemic oppression.”
