The Nigeria Labour Congress has decided to suspend its planned nationwide protest against the 50% hike in telecom tariffs approved by the Federal Government. This decision comes after a meeting with government representatives, where it was agreed to set up a larger committee to review the entire tariff structure.

The committee will be composed of five representatives from both sides and is expected to submit its findings within two weeks. The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, emphasized the importance of the union in any stakeholder consultation and stated that the outcome of the committee will determine their next steps, including protests, boycotts, or service withdrawals.

While the symbolic submission of protest letters has been put on hold, the NLC remains concerned about other economic issues such as high electricity tariffs and burdensome taxes on workers. Ajaero stressed that these issues must also be addressed moving forward.
