Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have relinquished their regional dominance after suffering a 1–0 defeat to Ivory Coast in the final of the WAFU-B U-20 Championship held in Accra, Ghana.
The result has reignited conversations around the dwindling fortunes of Nigeria’s age-grade football, particularly as the country continues to struggle in major youth competitions despite its rich football history.
Coach Aliyu Zubairu’s side had remained unbeaten throughout the tournament until the final, where the Young Elephants capitalised on a rare error by Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt in stoppage time. A fumbled free-kick gave Ivorian forward Zakaria Tindano the opportunity to slot in the winner his third goal of the tournament.
The loss marks yet another heartbreak for Nigerian youth football in a year filled with underwhelming performances across categories. Analysts have pointed to issues ranging from poor grassroots investment, weak scouting systems, and inconsistent preparation challenges that have plagued the national development pipeline for years.
In contrast, the Ivorians, with a more disciplined structure and youth investment drive, showed tactical strength and mental discipline throughout the tournament.
Football fans in Nigeria have taken to social media expressing frustration, questioning the readiness of the current technical bench and the Nigeria Football Federation’s youth strategy.
“This is becoming a pattern. We dominate qualifiers, reach finals, but can’t finish the job,” said Lagos-based sports analyst Tolu Ajiboye. “It’s time for the NFF to go back to the drawing board.”
In the third-place match, hosts Ghana defeated Niger 2–0, with Aziz Musibau netting a brace to secure the bronze medal.
