Nigeria’s Senate has confirmed former lawmaker Magnus Abe as the chairman of the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), a move expected to shape the country’s oil sector governance at a critical time for Africa’s largest crude producer.

The confirmation followed the Senate’s consideration of a request transmitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who nominated Abe as part of a broader effort to strengthen oversight and leadership within the state-owned oil company.

Lawmakers approved the nomination after reviewing the report of the Senate committee responsible for screening the nominee, which said Abe possesses the experience and professional background needed to guide the board of the national oil firm.

Abe, a former senator who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, has held several public offices, including serving as secretary to the state government in Rivers State. His political career has been closely tied to the oil-rich Niger Delta region, where energy production remains central to the economy.

The board he will now lead plays a strategic role in supervising the activities of NNPCL, which was transformed into a commercial entity under the Petroleum Industry Act. The reform aimed to modernise Nigeria’s petroleum sector, improve transparency and attract investment.

Analysts say Abe’s appointment comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to increase crude oil output, curb oil theft and stabilise revenue from the energy sector amid fluctuating global oil prices.

Nigeria remains one of Africa’s leading oil producers and a key member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), but production challenges and infrastructure constraints have affected its ability to fully meet export targets.

The Senate said the new board leadership is expected to support reforms aimed at improving efficiency and accountability within the national oil company, while helping to reposition the sector as a major driver of economic growth.
