Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially registered two new political parties, expanding the country’s political landscape as preparations continue for future elections.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, announced the development in Abuja on Tuesday, saying the approval followed the groups’ successful fulfilment of constitutional and regulatory requirements.

According to Yakubu, the newly registered parties met key conditions, including maintaining functional national headquarters, establishing structures across the states, and complying with financial reporting obligations as stipulated in the Electoral Act.

He said the commission remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy by ensuring equal opportunities for qualified political associations, while also enforcing strict compliance with electoral guidelines.

“With this registration, the number of recognised political parties in Nigeria has increased, reflecting the growing interest of citizens in participatory governance,” Yakubu stated.

INEC also cautioned that registration does not grant immunity from sanctions, warning that any party found violating electoral laws risks deregistration.

Political analysts say the move could reshape electoral contests by offering voters more choices, though concerns remain over the proliferation of parties with limited grassroots presence.

The development comes amid renewed calls for electoral reforms and increased accountability within Nigeria’s political system, as stakeholders push for a more credible and inclusive democratic process.
