Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming an academic ally for Nigerian students, according to new data released by Google.
On Tuesday, Google Search trend data revealed a surge of more than 200 per cent in searches combining “AI + studying” compared with 2024, signalling that learners are no longer merely curious about AI but are actively integrating it into their studies as schools reopen nationwide.
The figures show a sharp rise in subject-specific searches, with “AI + chemistry” recording a 50 per cent increase, while “AI + maths” and “AI + languages” grew by 30 per cent each. Searches linking AI to grammar also rose by 20 per cent. Among the most frequent queries were: Which AI is best for solving maths problems? and How can AI be used to tackle mathematical challenges?
Olumide Balogun, Google’s Director for West Africa, said the trend demonstrates how students are embracing AI not simply to find quick answers but as a tool to deepen their understanding of complex subjects.
“Nigerian students are increasingly using AI to build comprehension in challenging areas such as chemistry and mathematics,” Balogun explained. “At Google, we are committed to providing the resources that enable learners to study effectively, develop their skills and succeed.”
Google also noted that interest in AI is not confined to classroom applications. General curiosity is growing, with searches for “how to use AI” and “what does AI stand for” both climbing by 80 per cent, while “who is considered the father of AI” rose by 70 per cent.
The findings underline a wider trend of students adopting digital tools to support their academic journeys, with AI fast emerging as an indispensable study companion across Nigerian classrooms.
