The Nigerian Army is expanding its aviation capability and is seeking training partnerships in South Africa as part of a broader drive to enhance its operational readiness, the service said on Monday.
Army spokesman Brigadier‑General Onyema Nwachukwu said in a statement that the expansion of the aviation wing is aimed at improving the military’s ability to respond rapidly to security threats across the country.
“The Nigerian Army continues to explore strategic opportunities that will improve our capacity to secure the nation,” Nwachukwu said. “As part of this effort, we are pursuing avenues for specialised pilot training in the Republic of South Africa, where advanced aviation training structures exist.”
The announcement comes amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, including armed banditry, separatist insurgencies and communal violence that have stretched the capacity of the country’s security forces.
Analysts say enhancing air mobility could be a significant step in strengthening the army’s operational reach, particularly in remote and hard‑to‑access locations where ground operations have proved difficult.
South Africa’s military aviation institutions have trained personnel from other African countries in the past, and Abuja’s outreach signals a deepening of defence cooperation between the two nations, defence experts noted.
Officials said discussions with South African partners are at preliminary stages, and that further details will be released as agreements are formalised.
The Nigerian Army’s aviation wing, established over a decade ago, operates fixed‑wing aircraft and helicopters to support troop deployments, reconnaissance missions and logistical movement. Expansion plans are expected to include acquisition of new aircraft and enhanced training programmes for pilots and support crew.
Observers say bolstering the army’s air assets could reduce response times to crises, but argue it must be complemented by broader reforms and investment in intelligence and ground forces to produce meaningful improvements in national security.
