ABUJA, Nigeria – Former National Vice Chairman (North-west) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has confirmed that negotiations are underway to form a political coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 elections.
Mr. Lukman’s statement follows recent comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar regarding the formation of such a coalition.
While details remain under discussion, Mr. Lukman clarified that reports of disagreements stalling the coalition are untrue. He emphasized that the primary focus is on agreeing upon a political party platform for the coalition and determining candidate selection processes.
“In order to set the records straight, it is important to state that negotiations are ongoing and nothing has been finalised. Once concluded, a formal announcement will be made with all the details regarding composition of membership, programme of action towards 2027, framework for contesting the 2027 elections, etc,” Mr. Lukman stated.
He added that consultations are in advanced stages, with members working to align on key issues and prioritize collective goals over individual ambitions.
Mr. Lukman also addressed concerns regarding the registration of new political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He alleged that INEC is frustrating the registration process for new parties, including those associated with the coalition. He further suggested that some existing parties that met the electoral threshold are facing potential deregistration, which could limit the options for the coalition.
“For reasons best known to INEC, these applications are being frustrated. The only conclusion that can be reached in the circumstance is that INEC has decided that it will not register new parties,” Mr. Lukman said.
The formation of this coalition and its potential impact on the 2027 elections remain a developing story.
