MAKURDI, Benue State – The Benue State Government has strongly refuted calls for the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, labeling such demands as “political opportunism” and a “flagrant display” of desperation.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Mr. Tersoo Kula, the government asserted that the state is under complete control and that there is no justification for emergency rule.
“There is no unrest in Benue State. Gov. Hyacinth Alia is fully in charge and control of the state,” Kula stated. He accused those calling for a state of emergency of being out of touch with the realities on the ground and driven by ulterior motives.
The statement was issued in response to a press briefing by the Centre for Judicial Integrity, which had raised concerns about the state of affairs in Benue. Kula alleged that the calls for emergency rule were being orchestrated by “irritated political operatives” sponsored by factions seeking to undermine the progress being made under Governor Alia’s leadership.
Furthermore, Kula vehemently denied allegations that Governor Alia was attempting to bribe members of the judiciary. He challenged the Centre for Judicial Integrity to provide public evidence to support their claims or face the consequences of their “thoughtless denunciations.”
“This latest smear campaign is nothing other than a forlorn attempt by disgruntled political elements in Abuja to sabotage the integrity of a governor, who has persistently sided with the principles of justice and governance,” Kula said.
The government emphasized that Governor Alia is focused on delivering transformational governance and prioritizing the welfare of the people of Benue State.
“Alia has no wealth to corrupt anyone, specifically not an esteemed institution like the judiciary. His responsibility is to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law,” Kula added.
The statement concluded with an appeal to those involved in the alleged smear campaign to reconsider their actions and recognize the damage they are causing to the democratic process.
