Ali Ndume, senator representing Borno South, has lauded the Federal Government and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, for successfully facilitating the repatriation and resettlement of Nigerians displaced by insurgency and forced to seek refuge in Cameroon.

In a statement issued at the weekend in Abuja, Ndume described the initiative as a major humanitarian milestone, noting that it has restored hope and dignity to thousands of Borno indigenes who had lived in exile for years due to attacks by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The senator said the return of the refugees underscores the government’s commitment to stabilising communities affected by conflict and rebuilding lives disrupted by violence. He commended Governor Zulum for what he called “hands-on leadership” in ensuring that returnees are not only brought back safely but are also provided with support to reintegrate into their communities.

Ndume explained that the repatriation exercise was made possible through a tripartite agreement involving the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Borno State Government and the Government of Cameroon, with technical and humanitarian support from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to him, the collaboration reflects effective regional and international cooperation in addressing displacement caused by insecurity, while also reinforcing Nigeria’s resolve to bring its citizens home.

He urged sustained support for the returnees, stressing the need for continuous investment in security, livelihoods and social infrastructure to ensure lasting peace and prevent future displacement in the region.
