Brigadier General Mohamed Marwa (Rtd), the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has called on the National Assembly to lend its support for the agency’s ₦67.5 billion budget proposal for 2025. He made this appeal during a presentation before the House Committee on Narcotic Drugs and the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics in Abuja on January 14, 2025.
In a statement released by NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, Marwa emphasized the critical need for legislative backing to bolster the agency’s fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking. He praised the committees for their ongoing commitment to addressing drug-related issues, particularly their efforts to amend the NDLEA Act.
“I respectfully ask your good offices to continue to assist in our area of critical needs during the appropriation process,” Marwa stated. He highlighted the significant challenges faced by NDLEA commands across the country, especially the urgent need for adequate accommodation for personnel, which he described as vital for operational efficiency.
Marwa expressed concern over the safety of NDLEA officers, citing reports of attacks that have resulted in the loss of lives. “We trust that this esteemed committee will do its best. We know there are compelling demands from other MDAs, but the barracks project is critical to the operational efficiency and success of NDLEA,” he added.
Additionally, Marwa took the opportunity to commend President Bola Tinubu for his ongoing support, which he believes has been instrumental in enabling the agency to fulfill its mandate effectively. He reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to collaborating with the National Assembly to achieve a drug-free Nigeria.
“With your support, we are confident in our ability to enhance our operations and fulfill our mandate of safeguarding the security of our nation,” Marwa concluded.
