Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged the federal government to suspend the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) until the current security situation is addressed.
The call was made in a statement Friday signed by MURIC executive director Prof. Isiaq Akintola, who was reacting to the recent abduction and subsequent release of prospective NYSC members.
Akintola urged the government to discharge the abducted prospective corps members, saying the protection of corps members is the responsibility of the state.
“We cannot but conclude that the scheme’s greatest challenge is insecurity. Our young ones do not deserve this punishment. The federal government has the responsibility, in loco parentis, to ensure their protection,” he said.
“However, in view of the apparent inability to do this, at least presently, we demand the suspension of the NYSC scheme until the federal government is able to take full control of the security situation in the country,” Akintola added.
