A 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, has been arraigned for allegedly murdering his 27-year-old girlfriend, Ugwu Chinyere Rosemary, following a dispute over who infected the other with HIV in Enugu State.

The Enugu State Police Command said the suspect was arraigned on Friday, October 16, 2026, following the conclusion of investigations.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, Emmanuel allegedly killed Rosemary in his apartment on September 19 during an argument over their HIV status.

Investigators alleged that the suspect struck the victim’s head with a pestle, inflicted deep cuts on her head and neck with a machete, and severed her right wrist.

The severed wrist and other exhibits were recovered from the apartment during the investigation.

Emmanuel was arrested two days later, on September 21, after police rescued him from an angry mob.

Following his arraignment, the court ordered him remanded in correctional custody pending further proceedings. It also directed that the case file be forwarded to the Enugu State Attorney-General through the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating violent crime and prosecuting offenders. He urged young people, particularly women, to exercise caution in their relationships and remain alert to early warning signs of domestic violence.
