The Grand Khalifa of the Tijaniyyah movement in Lagos, Sheikh Aminullah Akoshile, has praised Professor Sheikh Ibrahim Ahmad Maqary, deputy Chief Imam of the National Mosque Abuja, for founding Tazkiyah University — Nigeria’s pioneering female-only higher education institution and the second of its kind in Africa.
Sheikh Akoshile described Prof. Maqary as “a beacon of knowledge, a servant of Allah, and an agent of social transformation.” He commended his relentless commitment to empowering women through education within the framework of Islamic principles.
“This groundbreaking initiative is more than an academic milestone; it is a divine intervention advancing educational inclusion for girls and women, especially in societies where cultural barriers have restricted access to quality learning,” Akoshile said. He emphasised that Prof. Maqary’s vision “embodies the true spirit of Islam, which champions knowledge, empowerment, and dignity for women.”
Highlighting the significance of the university, the Grand Khalifa stated, “Tazkiyah University marks a major stride in Nigeria’s educational landscape, offering women a unique platform to develop their talents and transform their prospects.”
Sheikh Akoshile further linked the project to Islamic teachings on education and women’s rights, quoting a hadith from Ibn Majah where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) affirmed, “Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.” He added, “The Prophet also emphasised treating daughters with kindness and respect, including providing them with education, underscoring Islam’s dedication to women’s empowerment.”
He stressed that the university represents more than just academic progress; it upholds “the values of compassion, justice, and equality central to the Islamic faith.”
