The Labour Party (LP) has postponed its series of congresses and national convention, which were originally scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Interim National Chairman, announced the decision in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja. He explained that the change follows a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee (NWC) and representatives of labour unions.

According to Asogwa, the party resolved to shift the dates to allow members and prospective Nigerians ample opportunity to fully participate in the ongoing membership re-registration exercise.

Under the party’s initial timetable, ward congresses were to hold on March 26, followed by local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, and the national convention on April 11. A revised schedule will be communicated in due course.

To ensure a seamless and credible process, the party has inaugurated a 45-member Congress and Convention Committee. The committee is chaired by Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, who represents the Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Other members include Comrade Salisu N. Mohammed, Hon. Obinna Aguocha, Hon. Amaobi Ogah, Hon. Ibe Okwara, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Hon. Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Hon. Benedict Etanabene, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, Comrade Lawson Osagie, and Mrs. Imaobong Ufot, among others.

Speaking during the inauguration, the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, urged committee members to carry out their duties with diligence, impartiality, and commitment. She encouraged them to use the extended timeframe to complete all necessary preparations, ensuring hitch-free congresses and the national convention.

The Labour Party appealed for understanding from its members, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and its supporters nationwide regarding the adjustment.
