Organised Labour in Nigeria has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately overturn the “unconstitutional suspension” of the elected government of Rivers State, imposed through a state of emergency.
The demand was a key point in the May Day address delivered by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo at Eagle Square, Abuja.
Labour leaders urged both the federal and state governments to cease actions that undermine civic space, emphasizing the need for democratic accountability, transparent governance, electoral reforms, and an end to the suppression of dissent.
“The federal government must end the genocidal killings and bloodletting across the country,” Ajaero stated, stressing the government’s primary duty to protect citizens’ lives and property.
Regarding proposed tax bills before the National Assembly, Labour demanded their immediate withdrawal. They argued that these bills, drafted without input from the NLC and TUC, unfairly burden workers while exempting wealthy individuals and corporations. Labour insisted on meaningful consultation and a seat at the table during the formulation of such policies.
Further demands included:
- An immediate reduction of telecommunication tariffs from 50 percent to 35 percent.
- An immediate salary adjustment reflecting current economic realities.
- Prompt payment of all outstanding allowances, pensions, and gratuities nationwide.
- Restoration of gratuity payments.
- An upward review of the retirement age.
- Automatic adjustment of pensions to account for inflation.
Labour leaders emphasized the urgent need for the government to address the escalating economic hardships faced by Nigerian workers.
