The Director-General of Media and Publicity to the Kano State Government, Sanusi Bature, has alleged that former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso is politically aligned with President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on ARISE News, Bature said the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) is no longer strong enough to go it alone and that key party stakeholders had agreed the NNPP needed strategic partnerships to remain competitive in 2027. He said discussions reportedly included the possibility of aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as an “Option A.”
Bature alleged that, with Kwankwaso’s approval, moves were made to engage APC leadership and that an arrangement was put in place for a possible meeting with President Tinubu to discuss political cooperation. He said the meeting never took place after Kwankwaso reportedly cancelled the appointment, citing a planned trip to China, and did not reschedule it.
On reports of a possible partnership between Kwankwaso and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Bature said a joint ticket would be politically unviable. Describing the idea as “strange,” he said he did not see such a partnership working and argued that ideological and political differences would make it difficult to sustain.
The comments come amid intensifying speculation about shifting alliances and potential coalitions within the opposition as political actors prepare for the 2027 presidential contest.
