Youths from Ibaji Local Government Area in Kogi State have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to construct a modern farm produce market and rehabilitate the long-abandoned Idah–Ibaji–Otuocha federal highway.
Their appeal follows the recent boat tragedy on the River Niger, which claimed dozens of lives on 29 September when a wooden boat conveying traders from Ibaji to Ilushi Market in Edo State capsized.
In a statement signed by its Board of Trustees Chairman, Tony Edike, and National Coordinator, Jerry Nwuchola, the Coterie of Ibaji Youths (COIY) lamented years of neglect and urged urgent government intervention.
The group blamed the fatal incident on the absence of critical infrastructure, including motorable roads and a functional market, which force traders to rely on risky river transport.
“In spite of being a major producer of rice, yam, cassava, fish, and vegetables, Ibaji still lacks electricity, good roads, schools, and healthcare facilities,” COIY stated.
They called for the construction of a centrally located market to reduce dependence on perilous boat journeys and for the revival of the abandoned highway project to improve connectivity between Anambra and Abuja.
The youths emphasised that both projects would not only prevent future tragedies but also boost trade, create jobs, and revitalise the local economy.
“Mr President, we hold firmly to your Renewed Hope Agenda. Let Ibaji feel this hope through real infrastructure and lasting change,” the statement read.
President Tinubu had earlier expressed his condolences to the government and people of Kogi State over the boat mishap, describing it as “shocking and unfortunate.”
