Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential campaign, has dismissed the defamation suit filed against him by Peter Obi, insisting the legal action is founded on statements he never made.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Morning on Friday, Okonkwo confirmed that Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), had initiated legal proceedings against him.
He, however, questioned the basis of the lawsuit, arguing that a defamation claim must be tied to specific statements that have already been made and are alleged to have harmed a person’s reputation.
According to Okonkwo, the suit does not accurately reflect his comments, maintaining that he never made the statements attributed to him.
The former Labour Party chieftain said he remains confident that the matter would be resolved through the judicial process, stressing that the courts would determine the merits of the case based on the facts presented.
Neither Peter Obi nor his legal team had publicly responded to Okonkwo’s latest remarks as of the time of filing this report.
The legal dispute marks another chapter in the growing political exchanges ahead of the 2027 general election, as key opposition figures continue to redefine alliances and settle differences through both political and legal channels.
