American rapper Kanye West has caused a stir with his recent statements, in which he suggested that American rappers should take inspiration from Nigerian Afrobeats artists, as well as Jewish investors and experts in Chinese and Indian technology.
In an interview with DJ Akademiks, West criticized the business acumen of American rappers, implying they lack understanding of the legal and commercial aspects of the music industry and rely on external help.
“None of these nggas [rappers] are as smart as me,” West said, before acknowledging the skills of those in the tech industry. He then stated that artists are “dumb,” particularly concerning financial matters. West further explained his point by mentioning the role of Jewish people and lawyers in the music business. He challenged the notion of running a successful record label or television network without Jewish involvement. He concluded by saying that American rappers need to improve their business skills, like “the Nigerians, the Chinese, the Jewish or like the tech Indian or some sht.”
