This latest incident comes less than a week after a devastating fire at the historic Singer Market, where infernos destroyed more than 1,000 shops and inflicted losses estimated in the billions of naira.
The federal government, together with state and party officials, has already pledged emergency funds — including an N5 billion intervention package and additional state support — to aid recovery for traders affected by the Singer Market fire.
Calls for Investigation and Improved Safety Measures
In the wake of the earlier blaze, the Nigerian Senate launched a probe into the causes of the Singer Market fire and directed agencies to audit safety standards across commercial hubs.
Market leaders and traders’ associations are urging authorities to intensify safety protocols, improve firefighting infrastructure and ensure swifter emergency response to prevent another economic catastrophe.
As Kano grapples with repeated market fires, traders and residents alike are left questioning whether current fire‑prevention frameworks are adequate to protect the city’s economic lifeblood.
