A public hospital in Kano, northern Nigeria, has admitted to professional lapses in the death of a mother of five, following mounting public pressure and demands for accountability.

Hospital officials confirmed that internal reviews uncovered negligence in the handling of the patient, whose death has triggered widespread anger among residents and renewed concerns about the state of healthcare delivery in the state.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the hospital management acknowledged that established medical procedures were not fully followed, describing the incident as a “regrettable failure” that should not have occurred.

The woman, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, reportedly died after seeking medical care at the facility, with relatives alleging delays and inadequate attention by health workers. Her death quickly drew public attention, with civil society groups and community leaders calling for a thorough investigation and sanctions against those responsible.

Kano State health authorities said an investigative panel has been set up to examine the circumstances surrounding the case and to recommend appropriate disciplinary measures. They also pledged to strengthen oversight and improve standards across public hospitals in the state.

The incident has once again highlighted long-standing challenges facing Nigeria’s healthcare system, including staff shortages, poor supervision and limited resources, issues that patients and advocates say often lead to avoidable deaths.

As investigations continue, the family of the deceased has called for justice, saying accountability is necessary to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
