The Kano State Government has launched an investigation into the tragic deaths of two students, Hamza Tofawa and Umar Dungurawa, at the Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, following reports that they were attacked by fellow students with locally made metal objects known as Gwale-Gwale.

Dr. Ali Makoda, the Commissioner of Education, gave the directive through the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Bashir Muhammad, assuring the public of a thorough, fair, and transparent inquiry into the incident.

“This brutal act was reportedly carried out by some senior students who decided to punish the deceased for allegedly committing an offence,” the statement signed by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Kiru, revealed.

During a visit to the school, the Permanent Secretary urged students to uphold discipline and avoid resorting to self-help in addressing grievances.

“You should avoid taking law into your hands but rather make sure you report any matter of concern to the school authority for appropriate action,” he advised.

He also expressed deep condolences on behalf of the state government and people of Kano to the bereaved families. “We pray Almighty Allah grants the souls of the deceased Jannatul Firdaus,” he added.

Director of Secondary Schools at the Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board, Abbas Abdullahi, condemned the tragic development and called for more responsible conduct among students.

“Kano State Government has promised to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth behind the tragic incident,” Abdullahi affirmed.

The incident has sparked widespread concern and calls for improved safety and supervision within public boarding schools in the state. The Ministry of Education has promised to ensure that justice prevails while measures are taken to prevent a recurrence.
