The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, after a majority of lawmakers endorsed a motion accusing him of gross misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.
A total of 38 legislators in the assembly signed the motion on Thursday, setting in motion the constitutional process that could lead to the removal of the deputy governor from office.
According to lawmakers backing the move, the allegations against Gwarzo include misuse of authority, actions deemed inconsistent with the responsibilities of his office, and conduct considered detrimental to public confidence in the state government.
Under Nigeria’s constitutional provisions, once an impeachment notice is supported by the required number of lawmakers, the assembly is expected to formally present the allegations and seek further legislative steps that could include the constitution of an investigative panel.
The development marks a significant political escalation in the leadership of Kano’s executive arm, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and could deepen tensions within the state’s political establishment if the process moves forward.
While the assembly has yet to announce the next stage of the proceedings, legislative sources say the motion reflects growing dissatisfaction among lawmakers over the deputy governor’s conduct in office.
As of the time of reporting, Gwarzo has not publicly responded to the allegations, and it remains unclear whether he will challenge the move as the process unfolds.
Political analysts say the coming days will determine whether the impeachment bid gathers the required legislative momentum or triggers negotiations within the state’s political leadership.
The impeachment process, if completed, would mark one of the most consequential political developments in Kano in recent years.
