Local government elections have officially commenced across Rivers State.
In Bori, Khana Local Government Area, officials of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) are awaiting the arrival of sensitive electoral materials for onward distribution to polling units.
Friday saw the distribution of election materials at the RSIEC headquarters in Port Harcourt, an exercise conducted under tight security and closely monitored by party agents. Ad-hoc staff and security personnel have since been deployed across the 23 local government areas.
The polls are being overseen by RSIEC Sole Administrator, Ibas, in the continued absence of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who remains suspended.
A heavy security presence was also observed on Friday within and around the commission’s premises, with access strictly limited to accredited officials.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has imposed a restriction of movement across the state between midnight and 6 a.m. to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process.
