Former Nigeria captain Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha has revealed that he still pays his elder brother royalties for the use of the name that became synonymous with his illustrious football career.
Okocha, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most gifted footballers, said the famous nickname “Jay-Jay” was originally associated with his elder brother, who was also a footballer.
According to the former Super Eagles captain, his continued payment of royalties is a reflection of the fact that the name was not originally his.
“I still pay my brother royalties for the name Jay-Jay,” Okocha said.
The revelation has offered an unusual insight into the origins of one of football’s most recognisable nicknames.
Okocha went on to establish the name internationally during a career that saw him play for clubs including Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers and Qatar SC.
His flair, close control and ability to beat defenders made him a fan favourite, while his performances for Nigeria further cemented his status as one of Africa’s football legends.
The name “Jay-Jay” ultimately became inseparable from Okocha’s identity, with the former midfielder earning widespread admiration for his entertaining style and remarkable technical ability.
Despite the global fame attached to the nickname, Okocha’s comments highlight the family connection behind the name and the respect he continues to show his brother.
For a player whose career was built on creativity and individuality, the story behind “Jay-Jay” adds another intriguing chapter to his remarkable football legacy.
