Amid speculation on social media that he had begun terminal leave, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, on Thursday presided over the commission’s routine weekly meeting and approved promotions for junior staff.

National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said the meeting also reviewed preparations for the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, the FCT Area Council poll, and party primaries for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections.

He disclosed that 471 junior staff were promoted following recommendations by the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee, out of 515 shortlisted. Of these, 214 advanced to Grade Level 07, 134 to GL06, 106 to GL05, and 17 to GL04.

Olumekun added that promotions for senior staff have also commenced, stressing that the exercise is routine and merit-based. The commission, he said, remains committed to staff welfare and urged employees to rededicate themselves to ensuring credible elections.
