The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to resume plenary on Thursday, despite an earlier adjournment targeting today for a reconvention.

The House had been expected to move forward with impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. The proceedings, initiated during the first sitting of 2026 last Thursday, cite “gross misconduct” as the primary charge. Specific allegations include the demolition of the State Assembly complex and extra-budgetary spending without legislative approval.

No Activity at Legislative Quarters

A correspondent who monitored the situation at the Assembly’s temporary sitting venue—the conference hall of the official legislative quarters along Aba Road—reported no signs of activity as of noon on Thursday.

Despite the previous adjournment specifically naming January 15, 2026, as the resumption date, the chambers remained empty and no legislative staff were seen preparing for a session.

Silence from Assembly Leadership

As of the time of filing this report, no official explanation has been provided for the delay, and no new date for the sitting has been announced.

Efforts to reach the House Chairman on Media and Public Affairs, Eneme George, for clarification were unsuccessful. He did not respond to multiple phone calls or text messages regarding the status of the plenary.

The continued standoff deepens the political uncertainty in the state, as the Amaewhule-led faction remains at odds with the executive branch over the legality of their sittings and the validity of the impeachment process.
