Celtic forward Kelechi Iheanacho revealed he asked team captain Callum McGregor for permission before taking the decisive penalty in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock. Iheanacho, who joined the Scottish champions as a free agent this month, calmly converted the spot-kick in stoppage time to secure all three points for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

“Three points, massive. I asked the skipper to let me take the penalty and he said it was fine,” Iheanacho told Sky Sports, as reported by the BBC. The 28-year-old striker’s match-winning goal capped a dream debut at Celtic Park amid initial speculation over how quickly he would adapt.

Iheanacho also praised fellow summer signing Sebastian Tounekti for his impact during the match. “Big drama, big drama. [Sebastian Tounekti] made the difference in first half and second half,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of making a strong start, Iheanacho added, “It’s very, very important to make my mark on my debut. Hopefully more to come.”
