Public affairs analyst Katch Onanuju has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of failing to demonstrate independence in its handling of corruption-related cases, citing the agency’s reported freezing of the Osun State Government’s accounts while referencing its case against former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News on Friday, August 7, 2026, Onanuju argued that the EFCC’s actions against the Osun State Government have raised questions about whether the commission is applying the law consistently across all cases involving public officials.
According to him, “If Yahaya Bello is right now on the ballot going to election, you have done nothing despite all you have said but you will jump to go and undermine the government and the governing structure of the Osun State Government then there is nothing like being independent in that.”
Onanuju maintained that the anti-graft agency should apply the same standards to every case, regardless of the political office or influence of those involved. He argued that allowing a public figure previously accused by the commission to remain active in the political process while taking swift action against a state government creates the perception of unequal treatment.
