Military personnel in the Republic of Benin have seized control of the federal government.
In a televised address on Benin’s state broadcaster on Sunday, a group of soldiers, identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation, announced the dissolution of the current government.
The committee stated that President Patrice Talon, along with all political officeholders, has been removed from power. All state institutions have been dissolved as well.
President Patrice Talon, who has held office since 2016, had previously committed to stepping down in 2026 following the presidential election.
