Gunmen have killed more than 60 people in a series of violent attacks on villages in Nigeria’s northwestern Kebbi state, according to local sources.

Residents said the attackers stormed multiple communities, including Shabanda, Debebe and Shaffaci, on Tuesday, opening fire on civilians and setting homes ablaze.

A source familiar with the incident told local media that at least 40 people were confirmed dead in the initial count, though the toll is feared to be significantly higher as more bodies are recovered.

“They are burning houses, destroying food supplies and killing anyone they come across,” the source said.

The assaults, which also affected nearby settlements, left large parts of the communities in ruins, with survivors fleeing for safety.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attacks.
