Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has raised concerns over the growing number of inmates awaiting trial at the Keffi Medium Security Correctional Centre. His comments follow a recent jailbreak where 16 inmates escaped from the facility, prompting an inspection visit to the centre.

Speaking after the tour, the Governor emphasised the urgent need to address the overcrowding issue, which has been exacerbated by the large number of inmates awaiting trial in Abuja’s courts. “The majority of the inmates here are awaiting trial in the Federal Capital Territory courts, not Nasarawa’s courts,” Sule explained.

The Governor acknowledged the overcrowded conditions at the facility, where many inmates are forced to sit on the bare floor. To improve living conditions, he has ordered the delivery of 500 mattresses for the inmates and pledged a one million naira donation for their upkeep.

Sule also promised to engage with authorities in the Federal Capital Territory, including the FCT Chief Judge, to explore ways of fast-tracking trials and reducing the pressure on the Keffi Centre. “We need to find a way to address this backlog,” he said, highlighting the need for collaboration to tackle the issue.

In light of the jailbreak, Sule pointed out that improving the security and welfare of inmates could help prevent further incidents.

“It’s not just about security; addressing inmates’ grievances will also help reduce unrest,” he added.

While security improvements are ongoing, Sule urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities, stressing that the safety of the community depends on collective vigilance.
