Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State criticizes President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, stating that they have caused unprecedented hunger, poverty, and mass unemployment in Nigeria. In a statement released by his Executive Assistant on New Media, Mr. Felix Ofou, Governor Oborevwori emphasized the negative impact of policies such as petroleum subsidy removal and Naira devaluation.

Oborevwori’s rebuttal reads partly, “Both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have rightly stated that Tinubu’s economic policies are not working. The policies have transformed Nigeria into the poverty capital of the world, with over 130 million of the population living below the poverty mark.

The Governor’s comments come in response to former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who endorsed Tinubu’s economic policies at an APC event. Omo-Agege claimed that these policies had led to increased federal allocation to states, economic growth, and higher incomes for farmers. However, Governor Oborevwori disputed these claims, pointing to the detrimental effects of inflation, Naira devaluation, and poverty.

“Tinubu’s economic policies have unleashed economic hardship on Nigerians and are not a desirable model for Delta State.
“Is this the model that Omo-Agege is recommending for Delta to copy? A model that has unleashed economic hardship on the people? Why would anyone recommend APC’s T-pain as a remedy to our woes? This is not a path desirable for Deltans and one they would want to embrace at this time.”

Governor Oborevwori warned against adopting policies that worsen poverty and suffering, citing reports from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund that criticize Tinubu’s economic strategies. He stated that Delta State should not follow a model that has made Nigeria the poverty capital of the world.

The Governor’s statement concluded by questioning the wisdom of endorsing policies that have caused economic hardship for Nigerians, emphasizing that such a model is not in the best interest of Delta State.
