The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promptly clear the outstanding three months’ arrears of the 35,000 wage award owed to civil servants, ensuring no further delays. In a statement issued on Friday, Mokwa, spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant-General, confirmed that payments for the second tranche of the arrears commenced on Thursday.
Initially, the government settled one month of the five-month backlog, leaving three instalments to be paid. Mokwa dismissed claims of reluctance, stating, “The Federal Government remains steadfast in its promise to disburse the 35,000 monthly wage award until all arrears are fully cleared.”
Frustration has been mounting among civil servants in Abuja over the delayed payments. Uche Anune, a civil servant, criticised the government’s approach, saying, “It’s unacceptable that action is only taken when workers protest. The government must be proactive.” Similarly, Joseph Edeh expressed disillusionment, urging the government to settle the remaining four months’ arrears in one go. “The delays have eroded trust. Paying the full amount now would show sincerity,” he said.
Franca Ofili echoed these sentiments, highlighting the financial strain on workers. “That 35,000 could ease significant burdens. The government must honour its promise and clear the arrears immediately,” she urged.
With pressure mounting, the government’s pledge to expedite payments offers hope to civil servants awaiting their dues.
