Kunle Olawunmi, a retired Navy Commodore who served in military intelligence, has asserted that the Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) knows the identities of those funding terrorism in the country but lacks the political will to prosecute them.

According to Olawunmi, arrested insurgents have named current governors, senators and White House‐adjacent officials as sponsors of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram. He claims agencies including the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA) are aware of their identities.

Olawunmi pointed to a group of 400-plus Bureau De Change operators allegedly arrested as terrorism sponsors in April 2021, questioning why the individuals have not been tried.

the former naval intelligence officer’s charges, if acted upon, demand a significant recalibration of Nigeria’s security architecture—towards transparency, accountability and financial disruption of terror networks. Whether the government will respond remains the pivotal question.
