Three Lawmakers Switch Allegiance, Sparking Concerns of One-Party Dominance
Abuja, Nigeria – In a move that has raised eyebrows and fueled concerns about a potential shift towards a one-party system, three members of the House of Representatives from Katsina State have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The formal notices of defection were read on the floor of the House by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during Thursday’s plenary session. All three lawmakers cited the ongoing internal crisis within the PDP as the primary reason for their decision to switch political allegiance.
Abdullahi Balarabe, representing the Bakori/Danja federal constituency, stated that he sought a more stable political platform due to the “protracted crisis” plaguing the PDP. Similarly, Abubakar Albaba Aliyu, representing the Batasari/Safana/Dan-Musa federal constituency, attributed his defection to the PDP’s “lack of cohesiveness.” Yusuf Majigiri, representing the Mashi/Dutsi federal constituency, cited a “high level of internal crisis without cure” within the opposition party.
Adding a layer of political significance to the event, Dikko Radda, the Governor of Katsina State, alongside Muhammad Ali, the APC chairman in the state, and other political heavyweights, were present in the House chambers to witness the defections.
The presence of the governor and state APC leadership underscores the strategic importance of these defections to the ruling party and the potential implications for the political landscape in Katsina State. The move by the three PDP representatives has reignited debates about the strength of the opposition and the potential consolidation of power by the APC, raising questions about the future of multi-party democracy in the region.
