Nigeria’s consumer protection authority has dismissed reports suggesting an imminent ban on airtime borrowing and data advance services, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) said in a statement that it has not issued any directive prohibiting telecom operators from offering such services to subscribers.

The commission clarified that airtime borrowing and data advance options remain legitimate services widely used by millions of Nigerians, particularly as a short-term solution for connectivity needs.

“The FCCPC has not announced, approved, or implemented any ban on these services,” the statement said, urging the public to disregard circulating rumours.

The agency added that it continues to engage with telecommunications providers to ensure fair practices, transparency, and consumer protection within the sector.

Recent reports had sparked concern among subscribers who rely on the services to stay connected during periods of low balance.

Authorities have now reassured users that there is no policy change and that services will continue to operate as usual.
