The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating former National Counterterrorism Center director Joe Kent over allegations he leaked classified information, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The inquiry reportedly began before Kent stepped down from his post earlier this week, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his sudden exit.
Kent resigned on Tuesday, citing his opposition to the United States’ military campaign against Iran. In public remarks, he argued that Tehran posed no imminent threat and criticised the rationale behind the conflict.
Details of the investigation remain unclear, and authorities have not publicly confirmed the nature or scope of the alleged leaks. The FBI has declined to comment on the ongoing probe.
Kent, a former Army Green Beret and CIA officer, had been serving as the nation’s top counterterrorism official since 2025. His resignation marks a rare high-level departure linked to internal disagreement over US foreign policy, particularly the widening conflict involving Iran.
The developments underscore growing tensions within Washington over the war, as well as heightened scrutiny of intelligence handling at senior levels of government.
