Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has accused the Accord Party of spending more than N40 billion during the last governorship election in Osun State.
Mr Fayose made the allegation in response to comments by Afrobeat singer Davido and his father, Dr Deji Adeleke, who had attributed the party’s electoral success to prayers and divine intervention.
According to Fayose, the claim that the election was won primarily through prayers was misleading, insisting that substantial financial resources were deployed across the state during the campaign and election period.
“Accord burnt over N40 billion on the last concluded governorship election. On Monday alone, they sent N7 billion across all local governments and wards in Osun State,” Fayose said.
He questioned the narrative that the party’s victory was solely the result of prayers, arguing that the scale of alleged financial mobilisation should not be overlooked in assessing the outcome of the election.
His remarks have added a new dimension to the post-election debate in Osun, where political parties and their supporters continue to trade claims over the factors that influenced the result.
The allegations, however, have not been independently verified, and Fayose did not provide publicly available evidence to substantiate the figures he cited.
The comments are expected to fuel further political debate over campaign spending, electoral mobilisation and the role of financial resources in Nigerian elections.
