The Jigawa State Government has received formal approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to commence the installation of cargo handling facilities at Dutse International Airport, marking a significant milestone in the state’s push to transform its aviation and trade infrastructure.
The development, confirmed by state officials on Monday, is expected to reposition Jigawa as a key logistics and agro-export hub in northern Nigeria.
Boost for Trade and Agriculture
The approval paves the way for the establishment of modern cargo infrastructure designed to facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce, manufactured goods and other export-bound commodities. Jigawa, known for its strong agricultural base, is anticipated to leverage the new facilities to enhance the export of farm produce to both domestic and international markets.
Government sources said the cargo installation would stimulate economic activity, create employment opportunities and attract private sector investment into aviation-linked businesses such as freight forwarding, cold-chain logistics and warehousing.
Strategic Economic Expansion
The Dutse International Airport, which has long operated below its full commercial potential, is now set for strategic expansion. Analysts say the cargo facility could significantly improve the airport’s viability and increase flight operations, particularly for freight carriers.
Officials described FAAN’s approval as a product of sustained engagement between the state government and federal aviation authorities, adding that work on the cargo infrastructure would commence in line with regulatory standards.
Regional Gateway Vision
The Jigawa State Government has consistently expressed its ambition to transform Dutse into a regional gateway serving neighbouring states and parts of the Sahel region. The introduction of cargo services is seen as a critical step toward achieving that objective.
With construction expected to begin soon, stakeholders say the project could redefine the economic landscape of the state, positioning Jigawa as a competitive player in Nigeria’s aviation-driven trade network.
