The Federal University, Otuoke, has honored Mrs. Esther Tonlagha for her exceptional humanitarian and community-focused efforts, awarding her an Honorary Doctorate of Science (DSc) in Community Development and Empowerment.
Mrs. Tonlagha, wife of oil and gas mogul Engr. Mathew Tonlagha, is also a successful entrepreneur and the founder of the Esther Mathew Tonlagha Foundation. She received the award in recognition of her unwavering support for community development and empowerment initiatives.
The ceremony took place during the university’s maiden combined convocation on December 8, 2025, in Otuoke, Bayelsa State. During the event, Mrs. Tonlagha pledged to continue contributing to the development of Bayelsa State and the nation at large. She also donated ₦100 million to the institution, expressing gratitude and excitement over the honor.
Speaking after receiving the award, Mrs. Tonlagha said:
“I am so excited today with this Honorary Doctorate Degree from the prestigious Federal University, Otuoke. This award will motivate me to continue doing my best for society. I will not relent in my efforts to bring joy to our people through my Foundation. My Foundation will continue to empower our people, and we remain fully committed to community development. I am deeply grateful to the Federal University, Otuoke, for this honor and will not take it for granted.”
Praises have since poured in for Mrs. Tonlagha. In a congratulatory message, Dr. Dennis Otuaro, Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, described the honor as a testament to her dedication to community development and empowerment. He commended the university for recognizing her selfless service, remarkable achievements, and the impactful work of her foundation.
Chief (Mrs.) Blessing Pondi, wife of the Managing Director of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, also congratulated Dr. Tonlagha, describing the award as recognition of her kindness, love for humanity, and selfless contributions to societal empowerment. She added that the honor reflects a life devoted to positively impacting others and bringing hope to many, while praying for God’s continued strength and guidance for Dr. Tonlagha as she continues to inspire and uplift communities.
