President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the recent deadly attack in Plateau State, where over 40 lives were lost in a brutal assault. He has called for an immediate cessation of the ongoing violence, stating, “Enough is enough.”
In a statement released Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his condolences to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the Plateau State government, and the affected communities. He urged the governor to demonstrate decisive political will in resolving the long-standing crisis and establishing lasting peace.
The President emphasized the urgent need for unity and harmony among the people of Plateau State, transcending religious and ethnic divisions. He called upon community, spiritual, and political leaders, both within and outside the state, to unite and break the cycle of retaliatory attacks that have plagued the region.
“The ongoing violence between communities in Plateau State, rooted in misunderstandings between different ethnic and religious groups, must cease,” President Tinubu asserted. “I have instructed security agencies to thoroughly investigate this crisis and identify those responsible for orchestrating these violent acts. We cannot allow this devastation and the tit-for-tat attacks to continue. Enough is enough.”
President Tinubu stressed the necessity of addressing the root causes of the conflict, which he noted has persisted for over two decades. “Beyond dealing with the criminal elements of these incessant killings, the political leadership in Plateau State, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, must address the root cause of this age-long problem,” he stated. “These problems have been with us for more than two decades. We can no longer ignore the underlying issues. It is time to tackle them fairly and find a lasting solution. I have discussed these problems with the governor over time and offered suggestions for lasting peace.”
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to supporting Governor Mutfwang and the Plateau State government in promoting dialogue, fostering social cohesion, and ensuring accountability, which are deemed crucial for achieving a permanent resolution to the conflict.
The latest attack, which occurred in the Zike community, Kimakpa, Kwall district of Bassa Local Government Area, resulted in a death toll of 51, according to Channels Television reports. Residents reported that attackers invaded the village in the early hours of Monday, firing indiscriminately at those fleeing the scene and setting houses ablaze.
