Former Vice Presidential candidate and Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has declared he is unafraid of any investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a day after his formal defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okowa, who served as the PDP’s running mate in the 2023 general elections, joined the APC alongside current Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other prominent figures in a ceremony held in Asaba on Monday.
Speaking on Arise Television on Tuesday, Okowa dismissed suggestions that his move to the APC was a calculated attempt to evade scrutiny from the EFCC. He stated emphatically that he had committed no wrongdoing and therefore had no reason to fear any investigation.
He refuted claims that his defection was the result of a deal brokered by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who allegedly offered him protection from EFCC probes in exchange for joining the APC. Okowa asserted that he had not discussed or met with Oshiomhole regarding his defection until the official ceremony, where they exchanged a hug.
“There is no sin to be forgiven because no sin was committed,” Okowa stated.
He also clarified that he was never arrested by the EFCC. While acknowledging the commission’s right to investigate him, he maintained that he had committed no crime that would warrant fear. Okowa explained that he received an invitation from the EFCC while he was abroad and promptly responded upon his return to Nigeria.
Okowa defended his record as governor, asserting that he served the people of Delta State diligently. He acknowledged that while his administration achieved significant development strides, being in the opposition had limited his access to the full benefits of federal government resources.
