The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) presented Certificates of Return to the victorious councillorship candidates from the by-elections held on 20 September 2025.
The official ceremony took place on Monday at the Commission’s headquarters in Benin City, with Ovuchor Suleiman representing the EDSIEC Chairman, Jonathan Aifuobhokhan.
While many winners collected their certificates in person, some candidates were absent from the handover event.
This presentation marks the formal conclusion of the by-election process, despite a pending High Court ex parte order that had sought to suspend the polls.

EDSIEC challenged the court order through a motion on notice and had announced its intention to proceed with the elections in a press release dated 19 September.
The by-elections, boycotted by key opposition parties, resulted in a clean sweep for the All Progressives Congress (APC), which secured all 59 available councillorship seats across 15 local government areas.
